SPEAKER CAPSULE BIOGRAPHIES

Theresa BeckerTHERESA BECKER has been the associate director of athletics for compliance at the University of Kansas since 2005.  She joined KU from the University of Nebraska athletics department, where she had served as assistant director of compliance from 1997-2005.   At Nebraska, Becker coordinated a comprehensive NCAA rules and compliance education program, which included the development and maintenance of an athletic compliance monitoring system.   She developed and maintained an athletic compliance policy and procedures manual, and provided interpretative support regarding NCAA, Big 12 Conference, and institutional rules and regulations.  She also served as head women's basketball coach at Iowa State from 1992-1995.     

Dan DoniganDAN DONIGAN is the head men's soccer coach at Top 10-rated St. Louis University.  He is a 6-time Coach of the Year award winner in Conference USA, the Atlantic-10 Conference, and from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.  In seven seasons at St. Louis, his Billikens teams have won 72% of their games.  Under his leadership, the Billikens have claimed A-10 regular-season championships all three years since they joined the league in 2005.  In addition, his teams claimed three consecutive Conference USA championships from 2001-2003.  He has taken five teams to the NCAA tournament, with two teams reaching the quarterfinals in 2001 and 2003.  During his tenure, Donigan has coached five All-Americans, four Academic All-Americans, and more than 50 All-Conference players.

 SETH GREENBERG is the head men's basketball coach at Virginia Tech.  The two-time Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year has established himself not only as a builder of programs, but as one of the hardest working recruiters in college basketball.  In his six seasons at Virginia Tech, he has made the Hokies into one of the nation's elite programs.  Prior to coming to Virginia Tech, he served as head men's basketball coach at the University of South Florida and Long Beach State University.  He has led his teams to nine post-season tournaments: 3 NCAA and 6 NIT.  The 1978 graduate of Fairleigh Dickinson was named an original member of the 2007 NCAA Regional Advisory Committee, and has been inducted into the Five Star Basketball Camp's Hall of Fame, an honor shared by some of the greatest coaches like Rick Pitino and Hubie Brown.

RICH LUENEMANN is the head volleyball coach at Washington University in St. Louis.  He is a coaching legend in both Division III and NAIA.  He is a 20-time Coach of the Year award winner, and in 1996, was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame.  His Bears teams won national championships in 2007 and 2003, with three other teams finishing as runners-up in 2002, 2004, and 2006.  In nine seasons at WU, his teams have won an incredible 89% of its matches, and won seven league championships.   Prior to arriving in St. Louis in 1999, he was the head volleyball coach at the University of St. Francis in Joliet, IL from 1981-1998.  He took seven teams to the NAIA national tournament, with his highest national finish being fourth in 1990.  His St. Francis teams won 69% of its games. 

Janet RayfieldJANET RAYFIELD is the head women's soccer coach at the University of Illinois.  She led her 2008 Illini team to 13 wins and a sixth straight NCAA tournament appearance, where the team made the Round of 16 before losing to eventual national champion North Carolina.  In her six seasons as head coach at the University of Arkansas from 1993-1999, she coached the 1996 SEC West Champions, two SEC tournament finalists, four All-Region players, six All-SEC players, and 27 Academic All-SEC performers.  A former president of the NSCAA, she has coached 11 first-team All-Big Ten selections and 40 Academic All-Big Ten honorees at Illinois.  A star in her collegiate playing days at North Carolina, she helped lead the Tar Heels to the 1981 AIAW National Championship, and was named All-American and Nike Player of the Year. 

Brian SmithBRIAN SMITH is the head wrestling coach at the University of Missouri.  Known for building winners, his Tiger teams are now continuously ranked among the Top-10 in the nation, reaching as high as No.1 during the course of the 2006-2007 campaign.  Owning seven consecutive winning seasons going into the 2008-2009 season, Smith's squads have finished among the Top-15 programs at the NCAA Championships for five straight years.  With a .663 winning percentage, Smith holds the highest winning percentage in Tiger wrestling history.  In May of 2007, his hard work paid off as he earned the Dan Gable Coach of the Year award.  A four-time letterman and three-time All-Big Ten wrestler at Michigan State, Smith's other coaching stops include Cornell and Syracuse.

Mel Tjeerdsma

   MEL TJEERDSMA (pronounced CHURCH-mah) is the head football coach at Northwest Missouri State University.  His Bearcats finished the 2008 season ranked #2 in the country, and he was named the AFCA Division II Coach of the Year for the third time.  He is the winningest coach in program history, guiding his team to 10 MIAA championships, two NCAA national championships, and six title game appearances in the last 11 seasons.  Among his peers in Division II, Mel is fourth on the active wins list  and has the 10th-best win percentage.  He has coached 36 All-Americans, 93 All-Conference players, and four players have gone on to NFL careers.  He has been named MIAA Coach of the Year 10 times, and AFCA Regional Coach of the Year seven times.
                  Coquese Washington                       
COQUESE WASHINGTON is the head women's basketball coach at Penn State University, and the first  female African-American head coach in Penn State history.  Prior to taking the head coaching position at Penn State, she was an assistant and associate head coach at Notre Dame for eight years.  Considered one of the top recruiters in the country, she helped the Irish secure eight consecutive Top 25 recruiting classes, a feat only accomplished by Connecticut and Tennessee.  Also during her tenure in South Bend, the Irish competed in eight NCAA Tournaments, including four Sweet Sixteen runs and a National Championship in 2001. The Notre Dame grad also earned her Juris Doctorate from the Notre Dame Law School before playing four seasons in the WNBA.
